Big 12 Basketball Power Rankings after 7 weeks of conference play
Matchup of the week: Baylor vs Texas Tech
Sneaky good matchup of the week: Oklahoma vs Texas
1) Baylor Bears
Last week ranking: 3 (+2)
Record: 21-4 (9-3)
Next week: @#9 Texas Tech (2/16/22, 9 PM ET), TCU (2/19/22, 12 PM ET)
Best wins: #15 Villanova, #17 Michigan State (neutral), #20 Texas, Iowa State, @Oregon, Oklahoma (2x), TCU, West Virginia (2x), Kansas State (2x)
Worst losses: Oklahoma State
Baylor was the only team in the Big 12 to win both their games this week, earning them the top spot on the power rankings. The team continues to get hit with the injury bug, this time Tchamwa Tchatchoua suffering what might be a significant knee injury. They’re hoping to look healthy this week when they take on Texas Tech in what should be one of the best games of the week in all of college basketball.
2) Texas Tech Red Raiders
Last week ranking: 1 (-1)
Record: 19-6 (8-4)
Next week: #10 Baylor (2/16/22, 9 PM ET), @#20 Texas (2/19/22, 12:30 PM ET)
Best wins: @#10 Baylor, #8 Kansas, Iowa State, #19 Tennessee (neutral), #20 Texas, Mississippi St, TCU, West Virginia (2x), Oklahoma State
Worst losses: @Kansas State, @Oklahoma
Tournament seeding: 3 seed (CBB Review, Making the Madness, CBS Sports), 4 seed (ESPN)
Texas Tech didn’t have their best week but didn’t have a bad week by any means. They got completely outplayed against Oklahoma to start the week and didn’t look great in the first half vs TCU, but they responded in a big way and got the win. This team continues to remain a championship threat and will have the chance to sweep both Baylor and Texas this week in what might be their most challenging week to date.
3) Kansas Jayhawks
Last week ranking: 3 (-1)
Next week: Oklahoma State (2/14/22, 9 PM ET), @West Virginia (2/19/22, 8 PM ET)
Best wins: #10 Baylor, #17 Michigan State (neutral), #9 Texas Tech, Iowa State (2x), West Virginia, St. John’s, Oklahoma (2x), Oklahoma State, Iona
Worst losses: Dayton (neutral)
Tournament seeding: 1 seed (Making the Madness), 2 seed (CBB Review, ESPN, CBS Sports)
Just another week of exciting basketball for Jayhawk fans, with both games coming down to the last second. Kansas really needs to learn how to close out games, because even though they’ve ended up winning most like against Oklahoma, Iowa State, and other teams, they can also lose them like to Texas, and in March Madness, that’s the end of the road. Jalen Wilson has looked really great recently and they welcomed back Zach Clemence, who had a big impact in the second half. The Jayhawks take on a light slate this week with Oklahoma State and West Virginia.
4) Texas Longhorns
Last week ranking: 4 (-)
Record: 18-7 (7-5)
Next week: @Oklahoma (2/15/22, 7 PM ET), #9 Texas Tech (2/19/22, 12:30 PM ET)
Best wins: #8 Kansas, #19 Tennessee, Iowa State, @TCU, West Virginia, Oklahoma, Stanford (neutral), @Kansas State, Oklahoma State
Worst losses: Kansas State, @Oklahoma State
Tournament seeding: 4 seed (ESPN, CBS Sports), 5 seed (Making the Madness), 6 seed (CBB Review)
It seems like Texas has cemented themselves as the clear 4th best team in Big 12 basketball. They aren’t in the same tier as the three teams above them but they are clearly above all the teams below them. They looked good against Kansas, pulling off the big home win for their best win of the season but then got completely outplayed against Baylor. Texas is at its best when they play through Timmy Allen, and hopefully, Beard realizes this and caters towards it. Upcoming is a redemption game against Texas Tech.
5) Kansas State Wildcats
Last week ranking: 5 (-)
Record: 13-11 (5-7)
Next week: West Virginia (2/14/22, 7 PM ET), @Oklahoma State (2/19/22, 2 PM ET)
Best wins: #9 Texas Tech, @ #20 Texas, @TCU, Oklahoma State, Iowa State, Wichita State
Worst losses: @Ole Miss, @West Virginia
Tournament seeding: OUT (CBB Review, Making the Madness, ESPN, CBS Sports)
Kansas State might end the season with too many losses to make the tournament, but they certainly deserve a shot. Beating Iowa State isn’t what it used to be, but is still a solid road win. Kansas State really can’t afford too many more losses if they want to make the tournament, and next week will help a lot as they take on two teams they are more than capable of beating.
6) TCU Horned Frogs
Last week ranking: 6 (-)
Record: 16-6 (5-5)
Next week: Iowa State (2/15/22, 9 PM ET), @#10 Baylor (2/19/22, 12 PM ET)
Best wins: LSU, @Iowa State, Oklahoma (2x), Texas A&M (neutral), @Kansas State, Oklahoma State
Worst losses: Santa Clara (Neutral)
Tournament seeding: 5 seed (CBS Sports) 8 seed (ESPN), 9 seed (Making the Madness), 10 seed (CBB Review)
TCU and Kansas State are pretty similar, Kansas State just has the better wins. TCU doesn’t have a win against a currently ranked team or a top 4 Big 12 basketball team but will have a lot of chances to do so. As long as they keep winning and losing the games they’re supposed to, they’ll be fine. In this week’s scenario, they should beat Iowa State at home and lose to Baylor on the road.
7) Oklahoma State Sooners
Last week ranking: 8 (-)
Record: 12-12 (5-7)
Next week: @#8 Kansas (2/14/22, 9 PM ET), Kansas State (2/19/22, 2 PM ET)
Best wins: @#10 Baylor, Iowa State, #20 Texas, Oklahoma, NC State (neutral), @Oral Roberts, Cleveland State, West Virginia
Worst losses: Oakland, Wichita State
Tournament seeding: INELIGIBLE
Oklahoma State goes 1-1 on the week to stay at .500 overall. They have a chance to do the same this week when they take on the two Kansas teams. They’re getting a lot of solid individual performances, with Likekele playing well against TCU and Cisse having a big game against West Virginia.
8) Oklahoma Sooners

Last week ranking: 9 (-)
Record: 14-11 (4-8)
Next week: #20 Texas (2/15/22, 7 PM ET), @Iowa State (2/19/22, 2 PM ET)
Best wins: #9 Texas Tech, Iowa State, Arkansas (neutral), Florida, @ West Virginia, @UCF, Kansas State
Worst losses: Utah State (neutral), Butler
Tournament seeding: 11 seed (ESPN), 12 seed (Making the Madness, CBS Sports), OUT (CBB Review)
Oklahoma actually had a pretty good week all things considered. First, they beat Texas Tech for a huge resume win. They then took Kansas to the buzzer on the road. This is a good team but they are in danger of having too many losses to make the tournament, with 11 already and games against Texas and Texas Tech in Big 12 basketball play still to come. If they beat Texas this week, then they’re in a good position to make the tournament, but they understand that every game means so much more from here on out.
9) West Virginia Mountaineers
Last week ranking: 10 (+1)
Record: 14-10 (3-8)
Next week: @Kansas State (2/14/22, 7 PM ET), #8 Kansas (2/19/22, 8 PM ET)
Best wins: #24 UConn, Iowa State, @UAB, Oklahoma State, Clemson (neutral), Oakland, Kansas State
Worst losses: Oklahoma
Tournament seeding: OUT (CBB Review, Making the Madness, ESPN, CBS Sports)
West Virginia finally won after losing seven straight, then got right back into the loss column. Barring an incredible end to the season, it looks like they’ll be left out of the field of 68. They’re looking to turn it around this week against the two Kansas teams.
10) Iowa State Cyclones
Last week ranking: 7 (-3)
Record: 16-9 (3-9)
Next week: @TCU (2/15/22, 9 PM ET), Oklahoma (2/19/22, 2 PM ET)
Best wins: #9 Texas Tech, #25 Xavier (neutral), #20 Texas, @Creighton, Iowa, @Oklahoma State, Memphis (neutral)
Worst losses: @Oklahoma, @West Virginia, Kansas State
Tournament seeding: 7 seed (CBS Sports), 8 seed (CBB Review), 9 seed (Making the Madness, ESPN)
Iowa State has officially lost hope, sitting in last in the Big 12 basketball standings, and haven’t won in the month of February. The team is good and are still comfortably in the tournament, but haven’t shown any signs they can win a game in March. Upcoming are two non-ranked opponents, as Iowa State hopes to finally get back in the win column.
