UConn basketball held off a late Georgetown rally in what was a historic night for the program.

There was a lot to love on Valentine’s Day for UConn basketball fans as they were treated to a matchup against longtime Big East rival Georgetown.

The Huskies were hot from the opening jump, letting it fly from deep early and scoring their first four baskets from behind the three-point line.

It was a back-and-forth affair for most of the first half, with both teams shooting 50% from deep at the under-8-minute timeout and UConn holding a 25-23 lead.

UConn basketball pulled ahead towards the end of the half, holding Georgetown without a field goal for over five minutes before Georgetown hit a last-second layup to cut the score to 41-33.

It was a slow start to the second half for both teams as UConn and Georgetown struggled to find an offensive rhythm. The game remained tight with Georgetown cutting the double-digit lead to just six in the midway part of the half.

Kayvaun Mulready kept Georgetown close, hitting four second half three-pointers as the game remained tight late into the contest.

UConn made things very interesting down the stretch as the game was seemingly over, but Georgetown kept hitting shots, and the Huskies continued to struggle with inbounding the basketball, giving the Hoyas the ball back off a turnover with 12.8 seconds remaining.

A quick foul call on Braylon Mullins sent Georgetown to the line, where they had the chance to cut the lead to just one, however they missed the second free throw, and Alex Karaban secured the rebound and a UConn win.

Several UConn basketball players stuffed the stat sheet; Silas Demary Jr. did a bit of everything, finishing just shy of another triple-double with 15 points, 12 rebounds, and 9 assists. Solo Ball had a team-high 20 points to go along with 6 rebounds and 4 assists. Alex Karaban had 18 points of his own and hit several timely shots down the stretch every time Georgetown closed the gap.

Alex Karaban sets UConn basketball record for most career starts and wins.

Alex Karaban has forever etched his name into the UConn basketball record books once again as he passed Jake Voskhul for most starts in program history.

He now has 136 starts in his illustrious career following Saturday night’s game against Georgetown, which speaks to his longevity and commitment to the team.

A lot of fans may not remember, but his first-ever game for the Huskies in the 2022-23 season opener against Stonehill was his only time coming off the bench. Samson Johnson was the starter in that contest, but suffered an injury, which paved the way for Karaban to start in every other game he has appeared in.

In addition to having the most starts, he now owns the program record of 116 wins, passing Samson Johnson.

With two national championships and the potential to win his third this season, it is safe to say that Alex Karaban’s name will be up in the Men’s Huskies of Honor.

Speaking of Huskies of Honor

Valentine’s Day saw the return of another beloved UConn basketball great as Hasheem Thabeet was honored and saw his name immortalized in the Men’s Huskies of Honor.

Jim Calhoun was witty as ever as he welcomed Thabeet into the UConn Men’s Huskies of Honor, saying that the 7’ 3” shot blocker was “someone I’ve always looked up to.”

Thabeet was a force at UConn from 2006-09 as he dominated on the defensive side of the ball, averaging over 4.2 blocks per game during his career en route to winning Big East Defensive Player of the Year and NABC Defensive Player of the Year in both the 2008 and 2009 seasons.

This success culminated in Thabeet being drafted second overall in the 2009 NBA draft, which tied Emeka Okafor for the earliest a UConn basketball player has been selected.
