The college basketball offseason is here, and we decided to have some fun over the next few months, ranking ALL 364 teams in D1. Number 284 is UT Arlington basketball.

Before you say we’re crazy – or that all of this is up for debate, let’s go over the very intricate process of how we came to this conclusion. We took a very statistical approach – with the help of Chat GPT – taking into consideration everything from March Madness wins and finishes, to AP Poll appearances, to conference players of the year. And then, a good friend of ours, Scott Blanchard, took our approach to the MAX.

Overall scoop on UT Arlington basketball

For only having a single appearance in March Madness, the Mavericks have had a surprising amount of success. In 58 seasons, they’ve had 20+ wins eight different times. Five of those came under Scott Cross, who spent a dozen seasons as the coach and took them to the tourney in 2008.

Going back further, the Mavericks once had a coach named Bob Snake LeGrand, who only had three winning seasons in 11 tries, but maybe one of the best names in college basketball head coaching history.

Besides Cross, no coach has really done a ton with the program, but current HC KT Turner has had two winning seasons in three tries, which is a great start.

In terms of players, three former Mavericks have won conference POYs. Albert Culton won the Soutland award in 1982, MarQuez Haynes in 2010, and Kevin Hervey in the Sun Belt in 2017. Hervey went on to be drafted in the second round, but only played 10 games in the 2020 season.

As a whole, the UTA program has seen a lot of success amidst some equally bad seasons, but the Scott Cross years really elevated them as a whole. They might be returning to that form under Turner, but only time will tell.
