The college basketball offseason is here, and we decided to have some fun over the next few months, ranking ALL 364 teams in D1. Number 286 is CSU Northridge basketball.
Before you say we’re crazy – or that all of this is up for debate, let’s go over the very intricate process of how we came to this conclusion. We took a very statistical approach – with the help of Chat GPT – taking into consideration everything from March Madness wins and finishes, to AP Poll appearances, to conference players of the year. And then, a good friend of ours, Scott Blanchard, took our approach to the MAX.

Overall scoop on CSU Northridge basketball
Next up, we stay out west, where CSU Northridge basketball takes spot No. 286.
The Matadors have been in Division I for 36 seasons, making it to March Madness twice – 2001 and 2009.
After eight straight losing seasons to start, year three of head coach Bobby Braswell started a turnaround of three straight winning seasons. That included a pair of 20-win campaigns, and the first tourney appearance in school history, also the last season for the program in the Big Sky. Braswell coached for 17 seasons, and to date, is the most accomplished in the program’s DI history.
Since moving to the Big West, more success has followed. The Matadors won the regular season conference crown in 2008 and 2009 and came close in 2024-25, finishing with a 14-6 record in the league.
Now under head coach Andy Newman, CSU Northridge has had three straight winning seasons, seemingly entering a new level of success within the program.
The program has actually had four former conference POYs: Brian Heinle (Big Sky – 2001), Lamine Diane (Big West – 2019 & 2020), and Josiah Davis this past season.
So for the Matadors, there is some solid history to look back on, but they might be living in the best part of the program to date, going 61-40 since Newman took over. He could easily get a bigger job in the near future, but for now, the Matadors are certainly taking advantage of having him on the sidelines.
