Overall scoop on Tarleton State basketball

Before you argue with why Tarleton State basketball is in the top 300 after just six seasons, pause and look at their resume.

The Texans have been .500 since joining the DI ranks and went 25-10 in the 2023-24 season. Somehow, they didn’t win the WAC regular season title, but to this point in our series, it’s one of the most impressive seasons.

Head coach Billy Gillespie has been all over the CBB coaching ranks, making stops at UTEP, Texas A&M, Kentucky, and Texas Tech, before landing here and sticking. And he’s done a terrific job with a young program looking to make it.

Obviously, it’s a smaller sample size, but they’ve got a 25-win season and two other .500 years, and taking the 2020-21 COVID year out of play, haven’t had fewer than 12 wins in a season. That’s worthy of this ranking!
