Braylon Mullins followed up his 24-point performance against Providence with a team-leading 16 points while also performing well all around with 7 rebounds, 3 steals, 3 assists, and 2 blocks against DePaul. Villanova yet again remains out of the top three in the Big East basketball power rankings, going up and down the previous week with a pair of close games against Creighton and Marquette.
Against the Bluejays, Villanova led for most of the game, only to watch the lead slip away with 9:59 left in the game. Acaden Lewis and Tyler Perkins each had great games, scoring 20 points and 18 points, respectively. However, both shot poorly from beyond the arc, going a combined 4-14 (28.57%) with each only scoring twice from downtown, while the entire team shot 6-24 (25%) in their perimeter attempts.
The Wildcats bounced back with a road win over Marquette. Lewis had another great game, recording 20 points and 8 assists. The team didn’t do well yet again from downtown, going 28% from beyond the arc.
5. Creighton Bluejays
Last week’s ranking: 5 (-)
Record: 10-7 (4-2)
Last week: W at Villanova (76-72), L vs. St. John’s (70-93)
Next week: vs. Georgetown (Jan. 13 – 9 p.m.), at Providence (Jan. 16 – 6:30 p.m.)
Quality wins: Oregon (Neutral)
Bad losses: N/A
Like the team above them, the Creighton Bluejays had an up-and-down week. After being down for the majority of the game, they came and pulled the rug out from under Villanova. Austin Swartz with his third 20+ point performance of the year. This win came despite being outscored in the paint 38-30 by Villanova.
Their next game against St. John’s was more humbling, being dominated in the first half and outscored again in the paint by their opponents, this time 34-24.
6. Butler Bulldogs
Last week’s ranking: 7 (+1)
Record: 10-6 (1-4)

Next week: at Xavier (Jan. 14 – 6:30 p.m.), at Seton Hall (Jan. 17 – Noon)

A short, painful week for Butler with a 14-point loss to the Red Storm. Finley Bizjack had a great game, with 21 points. Despite his great scoring day, the rest of the team couldn’t catch up. Defending the paint was a struggle, with St. John’s outscoring the Bulldogs 44-24 in points in the paint.
7. DePaul Blue Demons
Last week’s ranking: 9 (+2)
Record: 10-7 (2-4)
Last week: W vs. Georgetown (56-50), L at #4 UConn (60-72)
Next week: vs. Marquette (Jan. 16 – 8:30 p.m.)
Quality wins: N/A
Bad losses: Buffalo
While the week didn’t end well with another loss to UConn, DePaul got a win against the Hoyas, their fourth in a row since the previous season. Their win against Georgetown tied the NCAA record for fewest field goals allowed in a half for the shot clock era, only allowing one field goal in the second half.
8. Xavier Musketeers
Last week’s ranking: 10 (+2)
Record: 10-7 (2-4)
Last week: L at Marquette (65-66), W vs. Providence (97-84)
Next week: vs. Butler (Jan. 14 – 6:30 p.m.)
Quality wins: West Virginia (Neutral), Cincinnati
Bad losses: at DePaul, at Marquette
The back half of this week’s Big East Basketball Power Rankings is in flux. For Xavier, it was, like many others on this list, an up-and-down week.
Xavier saw itself down against Marquette for the majority of the time, nearly coming back before losing in the end on a Ben Gold slam dunk and failing to respond in time, thus wasting the great performance from Malik Messina-Moore, who recorded 22 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists, and 5 steals. The team itself did well from the perimeter, going 11-24 (46%).
Their rebound win over Providence gives them a morale boost as they look to rise up further with their next game on the way against Butler.
9. Georgetown Hoyas
Last week’s ranking: 6 (-3)
Record: 9-7 (1-4)
Last week: L at DePaul (50-56), L vs. Seton Hall (67-76)
Next week: at Creighton (Jan. 13 – 9 p.m.), vs. #4 UConn (Jan. 17 – Noon)
Quality wins: Clemson
Bad losses: N/A
What is going on in the Capitol? After Georgetown performed well in its non-conference schedule, the Hoyas have floundered in their conference matchups, losing three games straight. Their loss to DePaul is their fourth in a row against the Blue Demons since this past season. Georgetown struggled to score one field goal late in the game as 13 of their 15 second-half points came from the charity stripe.
10. Providence Friars
Last week’s ranking: 8 (-2)
Record: 8-8 (1-4)
Last week: L vs. #4 UConn (98-103 OT), L at Xavier (84-97)
Next week: vs. Villanova (Jan. 13 – 6:30 p.m.), vs. Creighton (Jan. 16 – 6:30 p.m.)
Quality wins: at St. John’s
Bad losses: N/A
The Friars, like Georgetown, have had it rough lately. The team performed well against the Huskies, leading 47-37 at halftime before UConn flipped the script and forced an overtime win.
Against Xavier, despite Stefan Vaaks leading the team in scoring with 21 points off the bench, the team’s poor perimeter shooting (8-32, 25%) and fast break scoring (outscored 30-16 in fast break points) took away multiple chances to cut into the Musketeers’ lead.
11. Marquette Golden Eagles
Last week’s ranking: 11 (-)
Record: 6-11 (1-5)
Last week: W vs. Xavier (66-65), L vs. Villanova (73-76)
Next week: at St. John’s (Jan. 13 – 6:30 p.m.), at DePaul (Jan. 16 – 8:30 p.m.)
Quality wins: N/A
Bad losses: N/A
The Golden Eagles finally got a Big East basketball conference win, let alone a win in general, with a Ben Gold slam dunk over the Musketeers. This ended a six-game losing streak in a close manner.
They followed it up with a competitive matchup against Villanova that unfortunately didn’t end the way they wanted it to. Marquette fought back with a 6-0 scoring run to put the score to 72-71 before the Wildcats countered and sealed the game.
