No. 17 Indiana basketball outplayed Marian, 106-64, to win their final exhibition game.

The Hoosiers faced the Marian Knights on Friday night in Assembly Hall. Marian, an NAIA school from Indianapolis, competes in the Crossroads League.

Before the game began, Indiana introduced Marian head coach Pat Knight. Knight’s father, IU legend Bobby Knight, was honored by Marian as the players and staff who wore red shooting shirts that said “The General.”

Indiana starting lineup: Myles Rice, Oumar Ballo, Malik Reneau, Mackenzie Mgbako, Trey Galloway

Indiana’s home opener had many exciting moments throughout the game. Here are 3 takeaways:

1. 3-point shooting struggles continue

While the Hoosiers are able to finish at the rim, 3-point shooting continues to be a problem for the team. They shot 1-11 behind the arc in the first half and by the end of the game they had shot 6-25 overall. It is evident that forwards such as senior Luke Goode and sophomore Mackenzie Mgbako will need to work on their shooting going into the rest of the season. The Hoosiers have been able to get by with work on the inside, but looking forward, 3-point shooting may begin to become a necessity against some opponents.

2. A fast pace is still IU’s goal

Once again, Indiana played with a fast pace from the beginning, with Myles Rice continuing to lead the way; however, this hustle was seen throughout the team, not just from Rice. Even center Oumar Ballo was seen bringing the ball up the floor after getting the rebound.

Toward the end of the game, Indiana could also be seen shooting multiple catch-and-shoot 3s. While the success varied, this could be a real threat to opponents, especially once IU improves its 3-point shooting.

Takeaway #3: Bryson Tucker

Freshman forward Bryson Tucker made his debut for the Hoosiers on Friday night and his performance was something fans can get excited about. Tucker finished with 19 points after proving his midrange game and showing promise with his work around the rim.

What’s even more promising is the chemistry the freshman seemed to have with the team including senior guard Trey Galloway. Tucker played with emotion and explosiveness and will be a huge asset to this Indiana squad.

Looking forward

The Hoosiers will begin the regular season on November 10 with a home game against Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (SIUE) at 8 pm EST.

The Hoosiers had a very successful preseason and are undoubtedly trending in the right direction. From what fans have seen from Indiana so far, an exciting season seems to be in the future.
