We Are D3

We Are D3 might not be the favorite to win The Basketball Tournament this summer, but they certainly have the potential to pull off an upset.

After coming up just short to the Kansas alumni last summer in a 70-67 contest, We Are D3 is coming back in search of its first ever TBT win. This performance showed everyone who follows TBT what Division III basketball can be, and We Are D3 knows a win this year is within reach.

Roster:

    • Adam Fravert (Wisconsin-Oshkosh)
    • Alex Sobel (Middlebury College & Sacred Heart University)
    • Da’Kquan Davis (University at Albany)
    • Dimitrius Underwood (Texas-Dallas & College of Charleston)
    • Isaiah Geathers (Lehman College)
    • Jackson Meshanic (Hobart College)
    • Jeffrey Hunter (Keene State College)
    • Josh Treadwell (Rutgers-Newark, Essex County CC, & Coppin State)
    • Kyler Stork (Eureka College)
    • Malik Lorquet (Massachusetts Boston)
    • Marcus Azor (Massachusetts and Dartmouth)
    • Thomas Quarry (Johns Hopkins)
    • Ty Nichols (Keene State College)

Coaching Staff:

  • David Clark (Assistant Coach)
  • Jason Harris (Assistant Coach)
  • Mike Rejniak (GM and Head Coach)

Region: Dayton

All-Time Record: 0-5

First Matchup: vs. Sweet Home Alabama (July 20 at Noon on TBT Live)

Team MVP: Adam Fravert

Fravert led the way for We Are D3 last year in TBT with 18 points and shot 40% from behind the arc. His performance had the Jayhawks alumni on the ropes in 2023, and you could pose the question about how the game would have gone had just one more three pointer went in.

Having a player like Fravert that can knock down threes at will is an asset every team wishes they had. It will be one that head coach Mike Rejniak will utilize a lot this summer in hopes of securing his first and the team’s first TBT win. Fravert will be relied on a lot for We Are D3.

Make-or-Break Player: Alex Sobel

Unlike most teams in The Basketball Tournament, We Are D3 only has one center on the roster. Sobel is going to be responsible for a lot of work down low this summer. His talent is not a question, but how Coach Rejniak uses his lone center will be the bigger question.

He was named the D3hoops.com National Player of the Year in 2023 at Middlebury College before moving on to play his final year of eligibility at Sacred Heart. At Sacred Heart, he averaged 12.1 points and 7.4 rebounds per game. If Sobel can put up similar numbers this summer in TBT, he gives We Are D3 a boost that it didn’t have a year ago.

Team Outlook

We Are D3 has been one-and-done every time it has stepped into TBT. The Division III alumni are a team that comes together really well and bonds over the concept of being able to beat anyone on any given day. 2024 could be the year the Division III alumni get over the hump and secure a win.

With a first-round matchup against Sweet Home Alabama, the opportunity to advance to the second round is more prevalent than ever before. Both teams are in search of their first win in TBT, meaning a lot is at stake in the opening matchup. Things will get tougher starting in the second round (presumably) against Heartfire, and it only gets more difficult from there.
