The college basketball offseason is here, and we decided to have some fun over the next few months, ranking ALL 364 teams in D1. Number 240 is UC San Diego basketball.
Before you say we’re crazy – or that all of this is up for debate, let’s go over the very intricate process of how we came to this conclusion. We took a very statistical approach – with the help of Chat GPT – taking into consideration everything from March Madness wins and finishes, to AP Poll appearances, to conference players of the year. And then, a good friend of ours, Scott Blanchard, took our approach to the MAX.

Overall scoop on UC San Diego basketball
Only playing in Division I for six seasons, it’s clear UC San Diego has what it takes to be one of the best mid-major programs in the country.
The Tritons have averaged over 17 wins per season, which includes a 21-12 record in 2023-24 and 23-11 this past season. But in 2024-25, they had one of the best records in all of college hoops, going 30-5, winning the Big West regular season and tournament titles, and getting a 12-seed in the NCAA Tournament.
That success propelled Eric Olen to a new job as the head coach of New Mexico, but last season’s 23 wins came under Clint Allard, so the program seems to be in great hands at the moment.
We mentioned it with Queens (NC) – and we have a couple more of these programs to get to – when you have a small sample size and start out GREAT, it seems to favor you in this formula. But you also can’t talk enough about what UC San Diego basketball has already accomplished at the Division I level!
