Before you say we’re crazy – or that all of this is up for debate, let’s go over the very intricate process of how we came to this conclusion. We took a very statistical approach – with the help of Chat GPT – taking into consideration everything from March Madness wins and finishes, to AP Poll appearances, to conference players of the year. And then, a good friend of ours, Scott Blanchard, took our approach to the MAX.

Overall scoop on Bellarmine basketball

Bellarmine’s only been in DI for six years, but they’ve already had a lot of history to write about. In fact, in 2022 – just their second season – they won the Atlantic Sun Tournament. Unfortunately, NCAA rules kept them from competing in March Madness, but that was sort of their championship moment, finishing the season with a 20-13 record.

Scott Davenport was the head coach of the first five seasons at the DI level, after taking the Bellarmine job in 2005. He led the Knights to the 2011 DII Championship. It doesn’t count toward our DI rankings, but it’s still a notable moment in their program’s history.

Now, Davenport’s son, Doug, is the coach, as Bellarmine went 13-19 in his first season. After going 34-21 in their first two years, the Knights have had four straight losing seasons. However, this past season was their most wins in a season since 2022-23, when they went 15-18.

Overall, it’s been a very solid introduction to the DI level, and for a program with some history at the DII level, you have to think it’ll start to click very soon.
