The college basketball offseason is here, and we decided to have some fun over the next few months, ranking ALL 364 teams in D1. Number 364 is West Georgia basketball.

Before you say we’re crazy – or that all of this is up for debate, let’s go over the very intricate process of how we came to this conclusion. We took a very statistical approach – with the help of Chat GPT – taking into consideration everything from March Madness wins and finishes, to AP Poll appearances, to conference players of the year. And then, a good friend of ours, Scott Blanchard, took our approach to the MAX. Here’s how the formula works:

Every program gets a total score based on four areas:

  • NCAA Tournament Success (45%)
    • Rewards Tourney runs, the deeper you go, the more points you get; championships matter the most by a lot.
  • Consistency Over Time (25%)
    • Measures how good a program is every year, not just at its peak. Includes Wins/season, bids/season, AP top 25s. Tries to separate one-hit wonders from consistently great programs.
  • Player Quality & Talent (20%)
    • Looks at the quality of players produced because great programs don’t just win – they produce elite players. Includes All-Americans, Conference POY, and NBA Draft picks that played at least a game in the Association.
  • Conference & Other Success (10%)
    • Captures success outside the other three categories. Important but less valuable than the others. Includes regular season conference championships, conference tournament titles, and other titles like the NIT, CBI, etc.

*As a side note, the first four teams in our rankings haven’t even played enough years to qualify for NCAA Tourney bids. None of them would’ve made it, but just because they’re so fresh, we lumped them into the first four teams because of a lack of overall data.*

After all that, we got our rankings! Join us as we count down FOUR per day, until we reach the top 20, when we move to three teams per day. Finally, the top five will be released one per day, until our top-ranked team is unveiled on July 15!

Overall scoop on West Georgia basketball

The Wolves just moved to Division I in 2024, so that’s your reason why they’ve pretty much got zeroes across the board. It was a rude awakening to the top level of college hoops, winning just six games in their inaugural season. But this year, they doubled that total and then some, going 15-17 overall and 8-10 in the Atlantic Sun.

Head coach Dave Moore is heading into his ninth year with the program, having a very good track record in the non-DI landscape. But for these rankings, it’s only DI stats that count.

Going forward, it will be interesting to see if West Georgia can build on this year’s near .500 finish even more. They showed some potential, but they will have to say goodbye to a handful of seniors heading into year three of being a DI program.
