UConn basketball with wire-to-wire win over Marquette.
The UConn vs. Marquette rivalry has been a one sided one since UConn basketball returned to the Big East. UConn came into the contest 10-2 against the Golden Eagles and were riding a five game winning streak over Marquette.
UConn basketball did not let this change as they won comfortably over a Marquette team many consider to be the Big East’s worst team this season.
Marquette started the game off slow, shooting 28% from the floor during the first 15 minutes of the game.
The guards for UConn basketball were active on defense which contributed to 8 turnovers for Marquette. This tough pressure forced Marquette off the perimeter and into the paint as they scored 18 of their 29 first half points from there while being limited to just 2 of 11 shooting from three.
It was a block party for the entire UConn team as 5 different players recorded a block in the first half as they continue to prove why they are top ten in the country in blocked shots.
Marquette ended the half strong going on a flurry hitting 4 of 5 field goals primarily attacking the paint to cut the lead to just five.
UConn basketball closed strong with a Tarris Reed dunk in the final seconds to bring a 37 to 29 lead into halftime.
Solo Ball was able to break the game open early in the second half, scoring 7 quick points to help UConn basketball build their lead to as high as 19 points in the opening minutes.
UConn basketball’s size proved to be too much to overcome for Marquette who is ranked 9th in terms of team length in the Big East.
UConn used to that to their advantage as they crashed the offensive glass snagging 9 offensive rebounds in the first 11 minutes of the second half.
“The way they attacked the glass in the second half was a huge difference maker,” said Marquette coach Shaka Smart postgame.
UConn basketball did not let up and held Marquette to just 28 second half points, many of which were in garbage time, in what was a defensive clinic for the Huskies.
It is impressive that UConn was able to win by double figures in a game where they did not shoot the ball particularly well. Dan Hurley alluded to after the game saying “I felt we got good enough looks for three, should have made double figure threes.”
UConn moved to 4-0 to start the season in Big East conference play and are going to be right there once again to win the Big East.

Can UConn basketball run the table in conference play?
The best season Uconn has ever had in conference play was just 2 years prior as UConn set a Big East record securing 18 regular season wins.
St. John’s tied this record last season with 18 wins of their own but this year’s UConn teams appears poised to challenge this record once again.
The gap between UConn and the rest of the Big East appears to be widening as UConn has started out conference play strong with four straight wins, with this 16 point victory over Marquette being the closest game so far.
There are still quality teams and tough venues as UConn has tough road tests against Seton Hall and Creighton, both of which have been houses of horror for Dan Hurley’s UConn teams. Playing at Villanova and St. John’s will also be difficult.
The rest of the conference should not pose much of a threat and it would be shocking to see UConn basketball lose on their home floor again this season.
So that leaves four remaining games in which it is conceivable that UConn could lose, the previously mentioned road matchups.
One team will always catch another one in conference play in college basketball and this will likely be the case once again. My prediction would be a 19-1 conference record finish for UConn with the one loss being at Villanova or at Creighton.

[…] Another strong week for the Huskies. Will they ever fall from the top spot in the Big East basketball power rankings? Not this week, after a pair of blowout wins over Xavier and Marquette. […]
