No. 2 Houston basketball took over late at home and got its second win of the season, 65-48 over Towson. Houston went on a 14-2 run over the last seven minutes and cruised to a comfortable victory.
1. Kingston Flemings is the real deal
The freshman point guard was in the top 20 of the 2025 recruiting class and is one of the best point guards in his class as well. Flemings has been thrust into the starting lineup as another facilitator alongside senior point guard Milos Uzan. The San Antonio native put up a really encouraging performance of 20 points on 8/10 shooting and three assists.
Flemings was the offensive engine for the Cougars at times during the second half and showed why he can be a complete player for Houston basketball. Flemings is able to shoot, attack the paint, and take control of an offense. He showed a lot of promise, and there is a reason he is already starting. While fellow freshman guard Isiah Harwell was not playing due to his injury and late start over the summer, Flemings has worked extremely hard and will be growing more every game.
2. Early Houston basketball season struggles
With this being one of the youngest teams that Kelvin Sampson has had with multiple superstar freshmen starting, growing pains during the non-conference and even early Big 12 days will be common. Houston has not necessarily blown out their opponents so far, as Lehigh hung around in the first half, and Towson was only down three with 15 minutes to go. Sampson mentioned their next game against Oakland will be even harder as they led over No. 1 Purdue in the second half.
The big reason for this is turnovers. The Cougars still need to get used to playing with each other and find that rhythm. Flemings and freshman center Chris Cenac Jr. each had three turnovers. The timing was clearly off, and it will take much more game action for that to get fixed. Houston in total had 12 turnovers, with nine of those being steals.
While Cenac Jr. had 13 total rebounds and led them in that category again, the Cougars were surprisingly out-rebounded at halftime, and Towson eventually tied them in total rebounds. The Tigers were really active on the boards and did a great job matching the Cougars’ physicality.
