Wofford Basketball basketball was one of the lowest seeds to make the NCAA Tournament as a six seed, but make no mistake, this team has what it takes to win a game in March.

General Information:

Team: Wofford

Location: Spartanburg, South Carolina

Record: 19-15 (10-8)

Head Coach: Dwight Perry (3rd season, all at Wofford)

What to know about Wofford basketball:

Wofford is a bit of a household name for college basketball fans, in large part due to Fletcher McGee and co.’s 30-5 season in 2018, which was capped off with an NCAA Tournament win. This is a different team though, with a different coach, and obviously, a whole different roster.

This Wofford team impressed in the tournament, winning their first game by 12, second by 20, and then scoring 92 points in the SoCon tournament final to win by 7. Kyler Filewich earned MVP honors in the tournament, thanks to a 13 PPG average as well as 6+ rebounds in each game. You might recognize the face because his “granny style” free throw form has made waves on social media.

This team has scoring depth, with five players averaging 9 points a game or more. They’re led by Corey Tripp, who averaged 14.3 PPG, which included a 20-point game in the semifinal. Wofford basketball’s two biggest strengths are rebounding and protecting the ball. They finished top 75 in both this season. You would think this means more possessions per game, but it’s actually the opposite. This team plays with a bottom-30 tempo in the country, beating teams with their half-court offense.

As mentioned earlier with Filewich, this team really struggles to shoot free throws. Wofford shot 66.8% on the season, 332nd in the country.

NCAA Tournament prediction for Wofford basketball: Round of 64 Exit

Seed: 15

Wofford earns the 15 seed in this Tournament and will take on Tennessee in round one. Wofford played one tournament team in the regular season, the Duke Blue Devils. The final score? 35-86. The good news for Wofford is Tennessee also plays at a very slow tempo. The fewer possessions could be helpful for Wofford.

We saw last year’s SoCon team, Samford, take Kansas the distance, and Furman upset Virginia in the first round the year before, so this conference is definitely capable of pulling off the upset. Wofford would love to join that list and pull off what would be the biggest upset of the whole tournament. They just need to make their free throws!
