Latest on Oregon basketball:

It has been a tumultuous season for the Oregon Ducks. The Ducks started the year by rattling off nine straight victories, climbing into the Top 10 in the AP Rankings. After a mediocre start to 2025, the Ducks lost five straight games, four of which came on the road, over the course of about two weeks.

Oregon has recovered with three straight wins, although all of those wins have come against teams that are in the bottom half of the Big Ten. Most recently, at Iowa, center Nate Bittle led the way with a 21-point, 10-rebound double-double, and had a late block to seal the deal. The seven-footer has been a constant source of offense for the Ducks this season, averaging 12.9 points per game and over seven rebounds per game. Jackson Shelstad, however, had just three points against Iowa despite averaging 13.3 points per game.

Shelstad is undoubtedly talented. Prior to the game against Iowa, he had at least 16 points in each of the last five games. Shelstad, however, is inconsistent. He now has four games with three points or less, including a goose egg against UCLA in a loss on January 30th. For the Oregon Ducks to overcome a powerhouse like Wisconsin, they will need Shelstad to put up big numbers.

Latest on Wisconsin basketball:

Wisconsin avenged one of their five losses of the season on Tuesday with a dominant 95-74 victory over Illinois. John Tonje led the way with 31 points, and Steven Crowl and John Blackwell had big performances, with 20 and 16 points, respectively.

Discipline and efficiency have gotten Wisconsin to where they are this season. Let’s start with discipline. Wisconsin is the best free throw shooting team in the nation, knocking down 83.4 percent of their free throw attempts. From beyond the perimeter, they take open threes, having made 36.8 percent of their threes, averaging over ten made threes per game.

Now let’s look at their efficiency. As head coach Greg Gard preached at the start of their season, the vast majority of their points come in three places: on three pointers, in the paint, or at the free throw line. According to Team Rankings, Wisconsin ranks 10th in the country in offensive efficiency. This is why Gard has been nominated for Coach of the Year.
