The Cowboys are currently ranked 13th in the Big 12 standings, tied with Arizona State. Most recently, OSU is coming off a 81-72 win vs Utah in Stillwater which ended a three game losing streak. Graduate guard Bryce Thompson led the way with 20 points on 60% shooting and fifth year forward Marchelus Avery had 17 off the bench. Junior point guard Arturo Dean also had a game high seven assists along with three steals.
Avery leads Oklahoma State with 12.7 PPG and Thompson is second with 11.81 PPG. Head coach Steve Lutz in his first season at Oklahoma State coming from Western Kentucky and is 0-1 vs Houston and Kelvin Sampson after facing them earlier this season. The three conference wins that the Cowboys have are all at home vs Kansas State, Colorado and Utah. This season, OSU is 2-5 on the road and will face one of their most difficult away games of the season in Houston. Oklahoma State is just one of six teams who have won in the Fertitta Center, along with Texas Tech, Alabama, Temple, UCF, and BYU.

Even with a one point OT loss to Texas Tech, the Cougars moved up one spot in the AP poll to no.5. Houston is still first in the Big 12 standings at 9-1, tied with no. 20 Arizona. Graduate guard LJ Cryer had 22 points in the last game, and leads Houston with 14.1 PPG. Graduate forward J’Wan Roberts averages 11.3 PPG and 6.6 RPG.
Head coach Kelvin Sampson in his weekly media availability said junior guard Emanuel Sharp will sit out in the two games this week vs OSU and Colorado, still recovering from his ankle injury suffered two weeks ago. This will allow it to heal better before Houston will really need him down the stretch in the tough games such as Baylor, Iowa State and Arizona.
“He’s too valuable for us, hopefully this will get him on the other side of recovery,” Sampson said.
Houston faced Oklahoma State on the road in the Big 12 season opener for both teams, where UH won 60-47 on Dec. 30. Currently, OSU leads the all time series 13-11. However, the Cougars have won the last three games and four of the last five. The last loss was in 2019 in Fertitta Center. Houston is 30-2 following a regular season loss since 2019, and has won by an average of 19 points in those contests.
