Latest on Colorado basketball:

After losing to the Sun Devils, the Buffaloes left Tempe with a two-game losing streak. That has now ballooned to an eight-game losing streak, as they are still searching for their first conference win this season.

The next four defeats were by 10 points or less, before losing 83-67 to BYU at home on Jan. 21 and 78-63 to Arizona on the road last Saturday. Tuesday’s hosts are currently ranked 103rd in the NCAA NET rankings, which is second-least amongst Power 5 teams, only ahead of Oklahoma State.

Colorado’s leading scorer, senior guard Julian Hammond III, had 19 points, four assists and three rebounds. It was a much better game in State 48 for Hammond, as he was held scoreless throughout his 30-minute appearance.

However, the Buffaloes are a top-heavy lineup, with graduate forward Andrej Jakimovski averaging 10.2 points per game. Graduate center Elijah Malone follows Jakimovski with 9.2 points per game, but has not reached double figures in the past eight games. Graduate forward Trevor Baskin, the team’s leading rebounder, has only posted single digits after his career-high 24 points against the Maroon and Gold.

Latest on Arizona State basketball:

After picking up a Quad 1 win against West Virginia, Arizona State lost 76-61 against No. 3 Iowa State. Despite a close game over the first 35 minutes, the Cyclones finished the “home-neutral” game on a 19-3 run to move to 17-2 on the season.

Iowa State’s senior guard Curtis Jones led with a career high 33 points, going 10-for-22 from the field and 8-for-10 from the free-throw line. Senior guard Keshon Gilbert followed with 12 points, with seven coming in a minute.

Redshirt senior guard Adam Miller led the Maroon and Gold with 13 points, the only Sun Devil in double figures. But five other players, including freshman guard Joson Sanon, making only his third appearance in conference play, had at least eight points.

However, Bobby Hurley’s side has still struggled with turnovers, posting 18 on Saturday afternoon. They are one of the few teams in the NCAA that has posted at double figures on giveaways in each game this season.

“You’d expect us to reach doubles, right?” Hurley told reporters after the game. “18’s way too many, especially down the stretch where we’re supposed to get a shot.”

Hurley also informed Arizona Sports that freshman forward Jayden Quaintance will be out for Tuesday night’s contest with a tweaked ankle from the Thursday practice before facing No. 3 Iowa State.

Arizona State vs Colorado prediction: Sun Devils by 8 (78-70)

Despite Quaintance’s absence, the Maroon and Gold should find some strides, especially knowing their success against the Buffaloes. Junior center Shawn Phillips Jr., who stepped up with eight points off the bench against Colorado on Jan. 4, should start in place of Quaintance. Overall, it will be a good chance for the team to build some confidence ahead of the Territorial Cup clash on Saturday.
