Latest on Seton Hall basketball:

The Pirates have suffered five straight losses and are still searching for their first Big East win. Wednesday night at home against DePaul presents a great opportunity for Shaheen Holloway’s bunch.

The Blue Demons also share the zero conference wins in common, so one way or another, one of these teams will walk away with a breath of fresh air.

Seton Hall will need to channel their defense, something that has led to a few wins, but has disappeared as the season has reached Big East play. During the losing streak the Pirates have allowed 75 points or more three times. In their previous nine games, that only happened once, giving up 76 to Vanderbilt.

SHU also needs to find a way to get Chaunce Jenkins going. The transfer was a big part of the team in November, but has cooled off, averaging just 8.2 PPG on 15-of-53 shooting in December and January. Isaiah Coleman has picked up the load, but can’t do it himself on a Pirates team without many other true scoring options.

For Seton Hall to win this game, they’ll need to revisit their strength in defense and find a few more buckets to hope that’s enough.

Latest on DePaul basketball:

The Blue Demons have struggled since their victory over Loyola Maryland. Against UConn, the Blue Demons played competitive basketball and outscored them in the paint despite their starting forward (N.J. Benson) standing at 6 feet 8 inches.

Against the Villanova Wildcats, DePaul couldn’t get anything going and played like a shadow of their former selves.

An even bigger blow was the loss of Conor Enright for majority of the game due to a shoulder injury. This injury, compounded by a lower leg injury to David Skogman, left the team without two of their best players. Against the Wildcats, the team only recorded 8 assists, tying their season-low for the Blue Demons when they were defeated by the St. John’s Red Storm.

The Blue Demons currently have the sixth best scoring offense in the Big East conference, averaging 77.7 points. They also, despite recent struggles, remain one of the best three-point shooting teams in the conference. They currently average 37.7% from beyond the arc, good for fourth in the Big East.

However, the team’s scoring defense and perimeter defense tell another story.

As it stands, DePaul has the worst scoring defense in the conference, allowing an average of 72.5 points, as well as the worst overall shooting defense (44.5% allowed from the field). Their three-point defense is eighth in the conference, with opponent’s averaging 34.9% from long range.

In terms of Enright and Skogman’s status for the upcoming game, both players are officially game-time decisions.
