Latest on Winthrop Basketball:
Winthrop is off to a strong start to their season under head coach Mark Prosser who is in his seventh season leading the Eagles.
The Eagles compete in the Big South Conference and have not begun conference play yet this season. However, they have had many standout wins, most notably against William and Mary where they won 86-85. Their most recent win was against Mercer where they defeated the Bears with a final score of 102-97.
In their game against Mercer, Winthrop had five players in double digits. Leading the way was graduate student guard Nick Johnson with 22 points and following close behind, senior guard Kasen Harrison with 20 points. Harrison transferred from Lamar University after his sophomore year and had 19 games last season where he scored 10 or more points for Winthrop. Another standout performance in the game against Mercer was senior forward Kelton Talford who provided 10 rebounds and 18 points for the Eagles.
After Indiana, Winthrop will travel back home to play USC Upstate on Jan. 2.
Latest on Indiana basketball:
Indiana is coming off of a win over Chattanooga. After a slow, back-and-forth start, the Hoosiers managed to come out on top with a final score of 65-74. Leading the way for Indiana were Malik Reneau and Mackenzie Mgbako who both had 14 points. Oumar Ballo was also a significant contributor with nine points and eight rebounds.
However, one of the most notable things about IU’s performance in this game would have to be the success coming off the bench. Kanaan Carlyle finished the game with eight points, two rebounds, and one assist and had a play in the last seven seconds of the first half that provided the Hoosiers with the momentum they needed going into the rest of the game. Once again, freshman Bryson Tucker was also a contributor, finishing with nine points and three rebounds.
The Hoosiers will look to build on this success in their game against Winthrop.
