What to know about Old Dominion
The Monarchs are a part of the Sun Belt Conference but have a stacked schedule this year, under a new head coach. They finished the 2023-24 season with a 7-25 overall record and 3-15 record in conference play.
The team is being led by new head coach and ODU alumnus Mike Jones. Jones played for the Monarchs in his college career and is excited to be back; however, they are on an early losing streak after their season opener. They had a tough game against Buffalo coming back from a 12- point deficit to lose by one point, 83-82, for the season opener and Jones’ first game as head coach at his alma mater.
The player to watch for the Monarchs is 6’ 6” sophomore, Robert Davis Jr. out of Detroit, Michigan. In the team’s loss against Buffalo, Davis Jr. had 25 of their 82 points and four rebounds. His numbers could compare to Caleb Love against weaker teams, how will they match up against each other?
Latest on Arizona basketball
Arizona is looking to continue their win streak with a big opening win against Canisius, winning 93-64. The bench saw a lot of minutes against Canisius and we expect to see the same against ODU, another weaker opponent.
Using the bench has shown the diversity and depth of this Arizona roster. As they play more together we see transfers, incoming freshman and veteran players putting up numbers that have gotten four of the Arizona players on the watch list for player of the year.
Veterans Caleb Love and Jaden Bradley stole the show against Canisius. Bradley with 15 points and four assists and Love with 17 points and six assists.
Arizona transfer Trey Townsend, saw 26 minutes and has been a part of the starting five in preseason exhibition games and their home opener against Canisius. He is turning heads and seeing minutes maybe for his ability to rebound on defense. He saw six rebounds against Canisius but just two points and one assist.
Why is Arizona stacking the top of their schedule with weak opponents, especially with such a strong team? Likely, they’re trying to gain momentum and see their depth before they face much stronger competition like Wisconsin and Duke. The Wildcats will travel to face Wisconsin on Nov. 15.
