The freshman forward out of Newport, M.E. was dropped 18 points and 7 rebounds in his official college debut in Duke’s 96-62 victory over the Black Bears of Maine. Flagg, however, did not make his first field goal until 6:25 left in the first half. Instead, he contributed in other ways, having several assists and an offensive rebound that led to his first basket.
“I’m proud of him for just impacting the game and playing every possession,” said third-year coach Jon Scheyer after the game. “He was giving it everything he had. I think that’s great that he can admit and say that he was emotional.”
The other top freshman on the court for the Blue Devils, Kon Knueppel led all scorers with 22 points on 8-for-13 shooting from the field. The guard out of Milwaukee, W.I. made his impact with scoring 13 points before Flagg got his first made basket from the field.
“The scoring was great, but I thought [Knueppel’s] defense was really good,” Scheyer said.
Caleb Foster and Tyrese Proctor, both returning from last year’s Elite Eight squad, added 11 and 10 points respectively. This added another dynamic offensively for Scheyer as they tune up for a top-25 matchup against Kentucky next week.
