Toledo basketball opens up the regular season with a road matchup against Troy on Monday.

 

Toledo basketball faces the Troy on Nov. 4 at 7 p.m. EST. This is the Rockets’ first game after their first-round exit in the MAC tournament to Kent State last March. Toledo went into that tournament as the number-one seed and held a 14-4 conference record.

What to know about Troy

The Trojans are coming off a season that they wish ended on a higher note in the Sun Belt Conference. They finished with a conference record of 13-5 and placed third in the; just three games behind first-place Appalachian State. They finished an overall record of 20-12, however, they had an upsetting end to their season losing in the first round of the Sun Belt Tournament to eleven-seed Texas State with a final score of 74-68.

Christyon Eugene who has since signed with CS Rapid Bucuresti in Romania and made All Sun Belt first team last season was the Trojans’ top scorer last season with 15.1 points per game. Thomas Dowd was the team’s top rebounder from last season averaging 5.4 rebounds per game. Myles Rigsby is the final headliner for the Trojans, as he won the Sun Belt Freshman of the Year award last season as the sharpshooter averaged 11.3 PPG on 43% shooting from beyond the arc.

Latest on Toledo basketball

The Rockets most recently fell to Michigan in an exhibition with a final score of 92-96. Toledo held a two-point lead in the final three minutes, but a 7-1 run from the Wolverines halted the Rockets’ momentum.

The star of the last game was last year’s MAC Freshman of the Year, Javan Simmons. Simmons had 21 points, 5 rebounds, and was 9-10 from the free-throw line. While Simmons was the subject of the majority of the headlines, the Rockets had some other contributors.

Sophomore Sam Lewis dropped 17 points and six of his eight shots found the bottom of the net. Fifth-year senior transfer from Buffalo Isiah Adams made his mark on the game with 15 points and 4 rebounds. Western Michigan transfer Seth Hubbard came off the bench and made his mark by dropping 16 points as he went 4-6 from the three-point marker.

Both teams should present challenges for each other in the opening game of the season!
