DePaul basketball commences the season with their first game against Southern Indiana on Monday.

The DePaul Blue Demons take on the Southern Indiana Screaming Eagles on Nov. 4 at 7 p.m. CDT (8 p.m. EST).

This is DePaul’s first non-conference game of the season, coming off of a 76-60 victory over Illinois Wesleyan in an exhibition game. Head coach Chris Holtmann will be in his first game with the program.

This will be the first time these two teams will square off. The last time the DePaul basketball team faced off against a team from the OVC was in 2016, when DePaul narrowly defeated Southeast Missouri State by a score of 81-78, at the time, they played at the Allstate Arena in Rosemont, IL.

What to know about Southern Indiana

The Screaming Eagles return to action after a rough finish to their previous season in the Division I Ohio Valley Conference (OVC). They ended with a 8-24 record, which was the fourth worst in the conference. In terms of conference play, they were tied with Tennessee Tech ending with a 5-13 conference record.

The end of the season didn’t go the way they were hoping for, losing their last four games, the last of which was to Tennessee State by a score of 64-78.

The team lost most of their best scorers, leaving forward Jack Mielke to lead the way. Mielke averaged 8.5 points and 4.1 rebounds while shooting 40.2% from beyond the arc. He was the fourth leading scorer for the team and was the second-best three-point shooter for the team.

Junior guard Sam Kodi is another player to keep an eye on. The transfer from West Texas College averaged 10.5 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 7.3 assists per game.

DePaul fans got a small taste of what to expect from the team in the Blue Demon’s victory over the Illinois Wesleyan Titans. Now, fans can expect to see continued development from the team as they face Southern Indiana.

The exhibition game saw two stars take the lead for DePaul basketball, with both sophomore guards Jacob Meyer and Layden Blocker each recording 19 points.

Meyer, a sophomore transfer from Coastal Carolina, lead the team with 19 points, six rebounds, three assists, and three steals.

Meanwhile, Blocker, who transferred from Arkansas, scored 19 points. He also tallied four rebounds and three steals in the victory. Graduate transfer David Skogman, who came over to Chicago from Davidson, nearly recorded a double-double with 12 points and nine rebounds.

With the entire roster comprising transfers, Holtmann has the chance throughout the year to create future stars for the DePaul basketball program.
