Virginia Tech basketball point guard Hysier Miller was released from the Hokies program on Wednesday afternoon, the program announced in a press release.

The statement released by the school said the reason was “due to a circumstance prior to his enrollment at Virginia Tech.” Virginia Tech added it wouldn’t comment further on the issue.

The Hokies had high expectations for their supposed future starting point guard, after Miller joined the program in April.

Miller had one year of eligibility remaining entering this season.

This is the second straight season Virginia Tech basketball has lost a potential key player just before the start of the season, after Rodney Rice left last year.

According to X (formerly Twitter) posts from Sports Illustrated’s Pat Forde, there is a connection between Miller’s leaving and the gambling watchdog alerts flagged back in March. Forde reported on the gambling inquiry.

Miller transferred to Virginia Tech after playing three seasons at Temple. He started all 36 games played for the Owls last season, averaging 15.9 points per game and had 4.0 assists per game.

Virginia Tech now has two point guards on its roster, sophomore Brandon Rechsteiner and freshman Ben Hammond.

The Hokies have their first game of the season on Nov. 4 against Delaware State. They were picked 14th in the ACC this season.
