The college basketball offseason is here, and we decided to have some fun over the next few months, ranking ALL 364 teams in D1. Number 214 is Georgia Southern basketball.

Before you say we’re crazy – or that all of this is up for debate, let’s go over the very intricate process of how we came to this conclusion. We took a very statistical approach – with the help of Chat GPT – taking into consideration everything from March Madness wins and finishes, to AP Poll appearances, to conference players of the year. And then, a good friend of ours, Scott Blanchard, took our approach to the MAX.

Overall scoop on Georgia Southern basketball

Coming from the Sun Belt, Georgia Southern basketball is next at N0. 214. They are also the latest program, nicknamed the “Eagles, with American at No. 216 and FGCU at No. 217.

This Eagles program has actually improved upon moving from the SoCon up to the Sun Belt. In a dozen seasons in their new conference, they’ve had eight winning seasons, with five of them eclipsing 20 wins. From 2013-20, the Eagles saw a great run under coach Mark Byington, who is now the man at Vanderbilt.

But head coach Frank Kerns was the man in charge for all three NCAA Tournament appearances in 1983, 1987, and 1992. All bids came from winning the Trans America Athletic Conference Tournament, as Kerns was named its Coach of the Year four times. He went an astounding 243-133 at Georgia Southern, winning four of their seven regular season titles in an eight-year span. Kerns would go on to have two more winning seasons before stepping down after one game in the 1994-95 season, as Georgia Southern faced NCAA rules violations.

It’s also worth mentioning Jeff Price, who coached the Eagles for 10 seasons and went 165-133. While he never led them to March Madness, his teams did account for the other three regular season titles, making it seven for the Eagles.

Overall, Georgia Southern has had multiple coaches do well, and now that they play in the Sun Belt, they have taken it in stride and have become a better overall program to take note of. Charlie Henry has led them to two winning seasons in a row, so we will see if a third is in store.
