The college basketball offseason is here, and we decided to have some fun over the next few months, ranking ALL 364 teams in D1. Number 255 is Stony Brook basketball.

Before you say we’re crazy – or that all of this is up for debate, let’s go over the very intricate process of how we came to this conclusion. We took a very statistical approach – with the help of Chat GPT – taking into consideration everything from March Madness wins and finishes, to AP Poll appearances, to conference players of the year. And then, a good friend of ours, Scott Blanchard, took our approach to the MAX.

Overall scoop on Stony Brook basketball

The Seawolves moved to Division I in 1999, and have played as an Independent, in the America East, and now the CAA.

After a rude awakening, head coach Steve Pikiell came to town in 2005 and transformed the program. The current Rutgers coach won only four games in his first season, but finished with six 20-win seasons in his last seven, a remarkable run of sustained success. The Seawolves won the America East regular season under Pikiell in 2010, 2012, 2013, and 2016, also winning the conference tournament to head to the NCAA Tournament in 2016.

Under Pikiell, the program rattled off America East Players of the Year, with Muhammed El-Amin in 2010, Tommy Brenton in 2013, and Jameel Warney in 2014, 2015, and 2016. Warney remains the program’s all-time leader in points, rebounds, and blocks and was a handful to guard in the paint.

After Pikiell left, the program didn’t miss a beat with Jeff Boals as the head coach for the next three seasons. After Boals went 24-9 with the Seawolves in his third season, he bounced for Ohio.

Since Geno Ford took over in 2019, Stony Brook has taken a small step back, but they’ve still stayed competitive. They won 20 games in his first season and again 2023-24. However, they’ve also had three losing seasons in seven tries, with more inconsistency as of late.

Still, the program had a great run of well over a decade of some outstanding basketball. Only one NCAA Tournament bid, but that doesn’t tell the full story!
