The college basketball offseason is here, and we decided to have some fun over the next few months, ranking ALL 364 teams in D1. Number 309 is CSU Bakersfield basketball.
Before you say we’re crazy – or that all of this is up for debate, let’s go over the very intricate process of how we came to this conclusion. We took a very statistical approach – with the help of Chat GPT – taking into consideration everything from March Madness wins and finishes, to AP Poll appearances, to conference players of the year. And then, a good friend of ours, Scott Blanchard, took our approach to the MAX.

Overall scoop on CSU Bakersfield basketball
It’s been a modest 20 seasons in DI for the Roadrunners, but it’s still been somewhat consistent, with an average of more than 13 wins per season and six winning seasons. I should note that technically, they joined in 2007, but College Basketball Reference counts the 2006-07 season, where they played a chunk of DI teams.
Still, they enjoyed lots of success under Rod Barnes, who served as the head coach from 2011 up until 2025. Barnes won over 200 games during that span, guiding them to the NCAA Tournament in 2016.
That was the best small portion of the Roadrunners’ success so far, going 24-9 in 2015-16 and 25-10 the next season.
However, Barnes only led them to two winning seasons over the next eight years, and Mike Scott’s first year ended in an 8-24 record.
Overall, a small time in DI and a few good years is what bumps CSU Bakersfield basketball up to 309th in our rankings, but this isn’t to say the program hasn’t had a handful of memorable seasons to look back on.
