The college basketball offseason is here, and we decided to have some fun over the next few months, ranking ALL 364 teams in D1. Number 318 is North Alabama basketball.
Before you say we’re crazy – or that all of this is up for debate, let’s go over the very intricate process of how we came to this conclusion. We took a very statistical approach – with the help of Chat GPT – taking into consideration everything from March Madness wins and finishes, to AP Poll appearances, to conference players of the year. And then, a good friend of ours, Scott Blanchard, took our approach to the MAX.

Overall scoop on North Alabama basketball
North Alabama has only been Division I for eight seasons, but they’ve had a successful start. Their 111 wins add up to an average of nearly 14 per season, the highest to this point in our rankings. While not every year has been a winning season, the Lions have had two so far, including a 24-11 campaign in 2024-25. They tied Lipscomb that season for the Atlantic Sun regular season title.
Head coach Tony Pujol has been there for all of it, getting his position in 2018, when they first transitioned to the DI level.
Before they went DI, North Alabama basketball was outstanding in DII. They had Final Four runs in 1977, 1979, 1980, 1984, and 1991, winning it all in ’79 and ’91.
Getting to that level of play as a mid-major in DI might be difficult, but they have the history and the start to keep building in the A-Sun.
