The college basketball offseason is here, and we decided to have some fun over the next few months, ranking ALL 364 teams in D1. Number 333 is FIU basketball.
Before you say we’re crazy – or that all of this is up for debate, let’s go over the very intricate process of how we came to this conclusion. We took a very statistical approach – with the help of Chat GPT – taking into consideration everything from March Madness wins and finishes, to AP Poll appearances, to conference players of the year. And then, a good friend of ours, Scott Blanchard, took our approach to the MAX.

Overall scoop on FIU basketball
FIU basketball will play in its 40th season in DI in 2026-27. They made program history in 1995, winning the Trans America Athletic Conference Tournament as the 8th and final seed. But they made NCAA history, because their 11 wins heading into March Madness are the fewest ever. And before the conference tournament, they had only won 8 games all season, but got hot, knocking off 1-seed Stetson, 4-seed SE Louisiana, and 3-seed Mercer.
The TAAC would turn into the Atlantic Sun, but FIU would leave for the Sun Belt, where they only had two winning seasons in 15 tries. But upon going to Conference USA in 2013, things have sort of been on the up. Still just two winning seasons in 13 tries, but a few more records closer to .500, like a 15-17 finish last season.
Two interesting names come to mind when talking FIU basketball. Richard Pitino coached them one year, going 18-14 in 2012-13. And future NBA point guard Carlos Arroyo is the program’s all-time leader in assists, with 459.
There’s a lot of competition in college basketball in the Sunshine State, but FIU has held its own at times, now just looking to take the next step.
