UConn basketball secured a huge road win over Villanova.

After a huge letdown at home against Creighton, UConn basketball bounced back and picked up a massive win on the road against Villanova.

“We got back to our identity,” said Huskies head coach Dan Hurley postgame.

And by that, he meant that UConn basketball returned to playing elite defense. Their second half defense went up to another level, which resulted in leading by 21 points with five minutes to play.

A late-game garbage-time surge by Villanova cut the lead to just 10 points after the final whistle, but overall, this was the best game UConn basketball has played in the past month.

This was UConn basketball’s eighth victory in their last nine matchups over Villanova, and after Saturday’s win over the Wildcats, the all-time series is now all squared 40-40.

A complete team effort

Watching this UConn basketball team carve up Villanova was a sight to behold. The entire team was involved on offense, with every player scoring four or more points, and every starter was between 9 and 12 points.

UConn basketball is at its best when the ball is moving and touching everyone’s hands, which is the key to why the Huskies played so well.

Not only was the offense clicking, but UConn put together its best defensive team effort in a long time.

Their on-ball pressure was much better at preventing lane penetration, and the team contested the few shots Villanova had at the ri,m which showed up on the stat sheet as eight blocks from the front-court players.

UConn basketball was also dominant on the glass as they out-rebounded Villanova 37-24.

Earlier in the day, UConn was selected as the fifth overall seed in the NCAA Tournament Selection Committee’s bracket reve,al and they backed up their ranking after this performance.

Implications for UConn basketball winning the Big East

UConn basketball was spiraling a bit coming into this game. After tough losses to St. John’s and Creighton, their chance of winning the Big East Regular Season Championship was dwindling.

A loss over Villanova would have put the Huskies in a tie with Villanova for second place and would have given St. John’s a two-game lead, which would have been difficult to overcome.

But have no fear, UConn responded how Dan Hurley has been preaching all season to set up a massive matchup against St John’s on Feb. 25th in Hartford.

The winner of that game will be in the driver’s seat to win the Big East Regular Season Championship and find themselves as the top seed for the conference tournament as well.

This would be important for either team as the second seed in the Big East Tournament will likely be playing the Big East’s third-best team in Villanova, which is a much tougher path to the championship than the one that the top seed will have.

Implications for UConn basketball’s seeding for the NCAA Tournament

UConn basketball has been firmly at the top of the NCAA rankings throughout the season, but a loss against Villanova would have seen UConn slip to the 2-3 seed line instead of the 1-2 position they are currently in.

With this win over Villanova, UConn bolstered its resume, which is tough to do in the Big East this seaso,n as several teams are having down years.

This win improved the Huskies’ record in Quad-1 games to 8-2 and added another elite road win, which is something the NCAA Tournament Committee factors into seeding.

If UConn couples this win with another one against St. John’s, then UConn would be in great shape to secure a highly coveted 1-seed in the NCAA Tournament.
