Indiana basketball was victorious against the Sam Houston Bearkats with a score of 97-71.

The Hoosiers kept their composure and overall had a stress-free game. Shooting wasn’t an issue for them today as they shot 61.8%, and 46.7% from outside the arc. Along with this, Indiana was successful with their free throws going 22-29. Leading scorers included sophomore guard Myles Rice (19), junior forward Malik Reneau (18), and senior forward Luke Goode (18). 15 of Rice’s points were scored in the second half, sparking energy and keeping the strong momentum.

Takeaway #1: Luke Goode is GOODIE

Goode had a stellar performance against the Bearkats. He struggled during the first seven games of the season, however, he couldn’t have been further from that during this game. Goode put 18 points on the scoreboard with 5-7 shots being 3-pointers. Not only did his points increase the score for the Hoosiers, but they also brought the team and the fans energy. His speed of play and intensity were fast throughout the game.

“Tonight we benefitted from Goode making shots,” said head coach Mike Woodson.

Goode has valued every moment spent playing for Indiana and will continue to do so,

“It is a dream come true to be able to wear the candy stripes and go out there and play.”

His execution tonight was a catalyst for other players’ achievements,

“It helps the whole team when I’m able to hit shots,” said Goode.

Takeaway#2: Too many turnovers

It was apparent in the first half that the Hoosiers undoubtedly gave the ball away too much. They had 9 turnovers in just the first half compared to 3 from the Bearkats. Many of these first-half turnovers were unforced errors. Indiana did turn this issue around however as they finished the game with only three in the second half. Whether it was simple miscommunications or rushed gameplay, the Hoosiers can’t keep this habit up as their schedule continues to get harder with every passing week.

Takeaway #3: Energy from the bench

Indiana recorded an impressive season-high of 36 from the bench.

“Everybody off the bench played well,” said Woodson. He was very pleased with the bench’s numbers.

Along with Goode’s contribution of 18 points, freshman forward Bryson Tucker, graduate guard Anthony Leal, redshirt freshman Jakai Newton, and senior center Langdon Hatton put points on the board. Indiana’s talent is evident when looking at the depth from the bench. It will be significant for the Hoosiers if the bench continues to bring the heat.
