UConn basketball and Dan Hurley land another top recruit in shooting guard Darius Adams.

While it may feel a little late for Huskies fans to hear the first commitment announced, it is mainly because Dan Hurley and his staff have been heavily targeting some of the best players in the country and Darius is certainly on that list.

Darius Adams is a fringe 5-star recruit as Rivals has him ranked as such, but ESPN and 247 Sports have him just missing the cut as a 4-star. His lowest ranking of the three sites is on 247 Sports which has him as the 22nd ranked recruit in the Class of 2025. To put that in perspective for UConn fans, Donovan Clingan was ranked 56th in his class and we all know what he was able to achieve from there.

Bio

Darius Adams is from Manasquan, NJ, and plays high school ball out of La Lumiere School in Indiana. La Lumiere has recently produced NBA players such as Jaren Jackson Jr., Jaden Ivey, and Isaiah Stewart.

Over this past Summer, Darius gained some serious attention from his AAU performances in the EYBL as he showcased his ability to score at multiple levels. With a smooth stroke from beyond the arc, Darius isn’t afraid to let it fly and if the defense plays him tight then he has the athleticism to blow past them and finish at the rim.

His final decision came down to UConn, Michigan State, and Tennessee in which he ultimately committed to the back-to-back national champions.

How does Darius Adams fit with UConn basketball?

The NIL era makes it extremely difficult to predict what a college basketball roster is going to look like, even just one season ahead. As of now, there will be some significant openings for the 2025-26 Huskies with Hassan Diarra and Samson Johnson graduating as well as NBA Draft potential from Liam McNeeley, Alex Karaban, and Jaylin Stewart. Again, it’s nearly impossible to project what the starting lineup will look like next season, but it’s very possible to imagine a player like Darius Adams fitting into Coach Hurley’s system.

Watching Darius’s AAU highlights, it’s pretty evident that he loves scoring the basketball and can do so in many ways. Standing at 6′-5″, Darius is able to shoot over the guards that close him out in 3-pt range and also able to finish layups over or around the big men protecting the post. Whether it’s coming off a screen for a catch and shoot scenario or having the ball in his hands and creating his own shot, the UConn coaching staff is going to have a lot of fun drawing up plays that feature his skill set. Each season of the Hurley era, the offense seems to get faster and Darius’s sharpshooting ability is going to be on full display.

It’s certainly not out of the question for Darius to be a go-to guy and be in the starting lineup as a Freshman, but it feels more likely that he’ll start his career as a sparkplug off the bench and have to earn his way into the starting five. Perhaps he could end up like Jordan Hawkins who followed a similar path of using his hot shooting and athleticism to earn more minutes.

Mentally, Darius Adams seems like a true competitor who is going to raise the intensity and work hard for UConn basketball. Plus with a recruitment announcement video like this, it seems like Darius will feel right at home in Storrs.
