Murray State Races Past Belmont Again in OVC Tournament

The Ohio Valley Conference Basketball Tournament was held at the Ford Center in Evansville, Indiana where impressive matches and upsets were making the results intense. Belmont University, Tennessee Tech, Southeast Missouri, Austin Peasy, UT Martin, Murray State, Morehead State and Jacksonville State all went head to head for the tournament title, but the usual pair of teams made yet another championship appearance.

Last year, No. 1 Murray State came out on top against No. 2 Belmont to gain its 16th OVC title. This year was a bit different for the two teams in their matchup when it came to the results. No.1 Belmont was upset by No.2 Murray State 77-65, and there was no way Belmont was coming back from the second half.

Belmont had a short lived lead in the first, but Murray State came back and made a significant 17 point lead to secure another tournament championship title. The Bruins couldn’t make the significant shots they needed to in order to come back alive around ready. Making one of their last 11 field goal attempts is what hurt them the most in the final minutes.

Sophomore guard for Murray State, Ja Morant had a total of 36 points during his 40 minute show, making him the top scorer for both teams. 19 points behind Morant was Belmont’s 6’ 8’ senior, Dylan Windler who couldn’t add enough to the scoreboard to push the team beyond the Racers.

Coming off the bench, the Belmont players just couldn’t shoot past the defense that Murray State was putting up.  The Racers were on their game and ready to come back for another win which is exactly what they did.

Not many more days left as the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament is set to begin Tuesday, March 19th; something all of these teams hope to themselves playing in.
