2018 Gilden Charleston Classic Provided Another Great Tournament

Entering their 11th year as one of ESPN’s most premier preseason tournaments during November, the court was an action-packed three days in Charleston, South Carolina at TD Arena. Showing their skills before the season moves into full swing was the Alabama Crimson Tide, Davidson Wildcats, Virginia Tech Hokies, Purdue Boilermakers, Wichita State Shockers, Notheastern Huskies, Appalachian State Mountaineers, and Ball State Cardinals.

Purdue and Virginia Tech were both ranked in the AP Poll Top 25 in this seasons tournament. Ranking No. 16, Virginia Tech came across a difficult road when No. 23 Purdue came too close for comfort. 89-83 was the final score of the match up which helped the Hokies prove themselves worthy of the 2018 tournament championship title which they rightfully received in the end,

Nickeil Alexander-Walker had an impressive 25 points to lead Virginia Tech which also helped him be named the tournament MVP. Justin Robinson had a close 23 points to help the Hokies come back from an intimidating 50-38 first half, but that didn’t stop them from chasing their goal.

At the top of the game, Purdue’s Carsen Edwards topped out at 26 points which makes this the fifth time this season he has had 23 or more points in a single game, but in the end, it wasn’t enough to put them above determined Virginia Tech. Edwards was 9 for 21 overall and made only three of his 11 attempts beyond the three point line, something that held the team back since he is such a key player.

Virginia Tech is the fifth ACC team to win the championship at the Charleston Classic. They now join Clemson, Miami, and Virginia on the wall of champions. It’s been 10 years since their last non-conference tournament title which was back in 2008 at the Holiday Festival in New York.

The 2019 tournament will bring in a lot of competition such as UConn Huskies, Florida Gators, Miami Hurricanes, Missouri State Bears, Penn State Lions, Saint Joseph’s Hawks, Towson Tigers, and Xavier Musketeers.
