Intense ACC Semifinal Games to Start off the Tournament
March 9th, 2018 gave the Atlantic Coast Conference great match ups, close scores, and upsets that will change the brackets and create new predictions.
No. 1 Virginia Cavaliers sped past No. 4 Clemson Tigers in the Game 12 match up winning 64-58. After holding the Tigers to just 36 points back in January, the Cavaliers are back in the ACC tournament semifinals once again.
Clemson jumped out to a seven-point lead from the start on the floor, but the Virginia defense stepped up putting the Tigers back in their cage. The final 9:33 of the first half consisted of no buckets, just free throws to break the eight-minute scoring drought for Clemson.
That type of defense is what propelled Virginia to a 30-2 overall record for the 2017-18 season.
Sophomore Kyle Guy lead the way for Virginia with 15 points, while Clemson’s Elijah Thomas had tying points and seven rebounds in the losing effort.
Now, the Virginia Cavaliers look to the future for their first ACC tournament title since 2014.
No. 6 North Carolina Tar Heels upset No. 2 Duke University Blue Devils 74-69 in Game 13 of the ACC tournament. Six days after Duke ended the regular season series with a win over North Carolina, the Tar Heels gave revenge and punched in their golden ticket to the ACC title game.
Carolina’s offense wasn’t exactly what they hoped for, but they finished the night with a five double-figure scorers and 24 assists on 28 made shots as they picked the Blue Devil’s zone apart the entire night.
Luke Maye led the way with 17 points and 10 rebounds, while 2 wings, Cameron Johnson and Kenny Williams dropped 10 points each in the match up.
Duke featured four double-figure scorers of their own who combined for all 69 of Duke’s point.
Gary Trent Jr. topped the charts with 20 points, while Marvin Bailey III registered a 19-point, 13-rebound double-double.
North Carolina sets their sights on revenger again Virginia after the Cavaliers won the only regular season meeting, 61-49 back in January.
